Pearl Care: How to Keep Your Pearls Beautiful for Years to Come

Pearls are precious natural gems that require special care to preserve their beautiful lustre and timeless elegance. Unlike many other gemstones, pearls are delicate and sensitive to environmental conditions. Four main factors can affect their appearance and longevity: high temperatures, excessive humidity, intense light and air pollution. With proper care and storage, your pearl jewellery can retain its natural beauty for many years to come.

To preserve the natural beauty of your pearls, it is important to wear them regularly and care for them properly. Pearls benefit from normal contact with the skin, but should be protected from excessive heat, direct flames, harsh chemicals, perfumes, cosmetics and abrasive materials.

These factors can damage the delicate layers of nacre, affecting the pearls' natural lustre and appearance. Always apply perfumes, lotions and other beauty products before putting on your pearl jewellery to help maintain its beauty for years to come.

We recommend gently cleaning your pearls occasionally with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dirt, oils and other residues. If necessary, use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap, then carefully wipe them dry with a soft cloth.

Avoid abrasive cleaning products, powders and harsh chemicals, as these can damage the delicate surface of the pearls.

Store your pearl jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and extreme humidity. Ideally, keep pearls in a soft jewellery pouch or a fabric-lined box to protect them from scratches and preserve their natural lustre.

Always put on your pearl jewellery after applying perfume, make-up and other cosmetics, and remove it before swimming, showering or bathing to protect its delicate surface.

For added protection, pearl necklaces should ideally be individually knotted between each pearl. This helps prevent the pearls from rubbing against one another and reduces the risk of losing them if the thread breaks.

To maintain their beauty and durability, it is recommended to have frequently worn pearl necklaces professionally restrung every two to three years, or sooner if the thread shows signs of wear or stretching.
